The Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is administered in the UK by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). The DWP ESA is a financial benefit that is received if you are unable to work due to injury or illness, or will provide you with personalised help and support so that you can return to work if possible. You will be able to apply for the benefit from the DWP in certain circumstances if you are suffering from illness and injury and if you are employed, self-employed or unemployed. You could also be transferred to a Employment an Support Allowance benefit if you have previously been claiming some other benefits such as incapacity benefit or income support. Further information about the DWP ESA can be gained by using the ESA phone number. When you first submit a claim for the benefit you will have to have a work capability assessment. This is for the extent of your injury or illness to be assessed for the DWP to understand how this will effect your work. Following the assessment you will then be placed into one of two groups if you are found to be entitled to the benefit. It may be that you will need to have regular interviews with a DWP adviser. The amount of the benefit that you will receive will depend on your own personal circumstances and the amount of income that you are receiving from another source. If you do have specific questions, however, it is recommended that you use the ESA telephone number. If you have any problems claiming for the benefit then you can seek independent advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau. Your local office can be found on their website www.citizensadvice.org.uk. There is also a national helpline and you are also able to chat online with an advisor during office hours if you prefer.

Other ways to get in touch without using the ESA Number

As well as the ESA number, you can also contact the team for ESA support using several other methods rather having to call ESA. However, the GOV.UK website does recommend that you call ESA for the easiest way of communicating with them. If you are applying for the benefit but do not wish to do this on the telephone then you can complete an ESA1 form and take this along to your local Job Centre Plus Office. You may also be able to speak to an advisor with any queries you may have with the process there rather than using the ESA helpline. You may need to contact the ESA helpline however if you do have any queries after you make your application. If your application for the benefit has been rejected you are able to appeal. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau can help you do this. It is a good idea in these circumstances to call the ESA contact phone number to find out why before writing a letter to the DWP.
